The Thai government has issued warnings of cases of swine flu and avian influenza within Bangkok. The chances of contracting these rare strains is relatively low if one takes extra precautions such as avoiding live animal markets. The risk of a pandemic outbreak is similarly low but if such an outbreak does occur the expense of medical treatment and repatriation may be significant. Before travelling make sure your vaccinations are up to date and you hold comprehensive medical insurance. Hospitals in Thailand often require proof of your ability to pay for prior to treatment.
